The Men’s Final: An Epic for the Ages

The men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was nothing short of legendary. In what became the longest French Open final in history at five hours and 29 minutes, Alcaraz pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in Grand Slam history, defeating Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (10-2).

The match seemed all but over when Sinner held three championship points in the fourth set, leading two sets to one. But Alcaraz, showing the heart of a champion, saved all three match points and fought back in extraordinary fashion. The Spaniard became the first man since Rafael Nadal to successfully defend a French Open title, cementing his status as the new king of clay.

The statistics tell the story of an epic battle: Alcaraz hit 89 winners compared to Sinner’s 71, while both players pushed each other to their absolute limits. The crowd at Court Philippe-Chatrier was electrified throughout, witnessing tennis history unfold before their eyes. This marked the first Grand Slam final between the sport’s two ascending stars, officially ushering in a new era of men’s tennis.

Gauff’s Breakthrough Moment

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff delivered her own masterpiece, defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 to claim her first French Open championship. The 21-year-old American showed remarkable composure, fighting back from a set down to capture her second Grand Slam title.

Gauff’s performance was a study in resilience and tactical brilliance. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, she completely turned the match around, winning the second set 6-2 by capitalizing on Sabalenka’s 19 unforced errors. The statistics highlighted Gauff’s superior court coverage and defensive skills, as she committed just 30 unforced errors compared to Sabalenka’s staggering 70.

This victory marked a significant milestone for Gauff, who had lost the 2022 French Open final to Iga Swiatek. Her emotional post-match speech, where she quoted Tyler, The Creator saying “If I ever told you I had a doubt inside me, I must be lying,” perfectly captured her journey from heartbreak to triumph.

The Legendary Trophies: Symbols of Tennis History

The trophies awarded at Roland Garros are far more than mere prizes—they are works of art steeped in French tennis history. Both champions lifted trophies that honor legendary figures from the sport’s golden age.

La Coupe des Mousquetaires

Alcaraz hoisted La Coupe des Mousquetaires (The Musketeers’ Trophy), a magnificent silver bowl that pays tribute to the four legendary French tennis players known as “The Four Musketeers”: Jacques Brugnon, Jean Borotra, Henri Cochet, and René Lacoste. Created in its current form in 1981, the trophy was designed by the prestigious Parisian jewelers Mellerio dits Meller, a family business dating back to 1613.

The trophy is a masterpiece of craftsmanship: a wide-necked silver bowl bordered with vine leaves and decorated with two elegant swan-shaped handles, mounted on a marble base inscribed with the names of every winner since 1891. The original trophy weighs 14 kg, stands 40 cm high and 19 cm wide, and resides in the office of the French Tennis Federation president, emerging only once a year for the final ceremony.

La Coupe Suzanne Lenglen

Gauff received La Coupe Suzanne Lenglen, named after the iconic French champion who won Roland Garros six times and revolutionized women’s tennis with her modern style and flair. Awarded since 1979, this trophy is almost identical to the cup originally presented to Lenglen by the City of Nice, with only minor variations.

Like all Grand Slam champions, both Alcaraz and Gauff received smaller replicas to keep, while the originals remain permanently at Roland Garros. The only exception in recent history was in 2017, when Rafael Nadal received a full-size replica for his historic 10th French Open victory.

Historic Achievement in Seeding

The 2025 French Open made history as both the men’s and women’s finals featured the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, a rare occurrence that underscored the exceptional quality of tennis throughout the tournament. This marked the first time in recent memory that the top two seeds on both tours reached their respective finals at Roland Garros.

A Fitting Tribute to the King of Clay

Perhaps the most emotionally charged moment of the tournament came with the special ceremony honoring Rafael Nadal. The 14-time French Open champion, who retired in November 2024, was given a hero’s welcome on Court Philippe-Chatrier, where a permanent plaque with his footprint was installed to commemorate his unprecedented dominance at Roland Garros.

The ceremony was made even more special by the presence of Nadal’s longtime rivals – Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Andy Murray – who joined him on court. The crowd created a stunning visual tribute, wearing different colored t-shirts to spell out “14 RG, Rafa,” celebrating his record-breaking 14 French Open titles and remarkable 112-4 win-loss record at the tournament.

A New Era Begins

The 2025 French Open will be remembered as a changing of the guard moment in tennis. Alcaraz’s successful title defense and Gauff’s breakthrough victory signal the arrival of a new generation ready to carry the sport forward. With both champions showing the kind of resilience and skill that defined their predecessors, tennis fans can look forward to many more epic battles in the years to come.

As the red clay settles at Roland Garros, one thing is certain: the 2025 French Open delivered everything tennis fans could have hoped for and more, creating memories that will be cherished for decades to come.
